Soda vs. Pop

Can you explain this phenomena?

I did know that it was called Coke in the south because I had a roommate from Mississippi. It's was very confusing the first few times she asked us if we wanted a "Coke." :)I think most of the time I call it soda pop, but sometimes it's one or the other. It really just depends on the day.

Chance, June 27, 2008 at 12:51:00 AM EDT: I'm pleased to report that after having only lived in the South for just under a year, my Western wife is referring to sodas as Coke now.
